THE INTERESTING HISTORY OF BAGPIPES AND FIREFIGHTERS

While the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl New Braunfels is a fun tradition started by the New Braunfels Firefighters Pipes and Drums, there is rich history behind this group and others like it across the country. During the migration following the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s many of the Irish arriving in American had challenges finding work due to discrimination, however the jobs that were most accessible were some of the most dangerous, including firefighters, policeman and emergency responders. The playing of bagpipes at weddings, dances and funerals was an Irish tradition and with many Irishmen falling in the line of duty, the playing of bagpipes at an Irish firefighter’s funeral became a common occurrence in the U.S. This tradition became so popular that even those families that were not of Irish descent requested the playing of bagpipes at funerals for their fallen heroes and it has become a symbol of honoring all emergency responders. The New Braunfels Firefighters Pipe and Drums is a non‑profit organization comprised of active New Braunfels firefighters that carry on these traditions as well provide support for local community organizations and individuals through fundraisers and special events.
