NBISD – Meet the Principal of New Braunfels High
Veramendi is buzzing with anticipation as the new school year rapidly approaches, and to help our residents get better acquainted with the leadership shaping the educational experience of their children, we sat down with the principal of New Braunfels High School. With over two decades of dedication to education and a deep commitment to the New Braunfels Independent School District, Greg Hughes is entering his second year at NBHS with a focus on setting the standard for academic excellence.
How long have you been in education and in your current role as principal of New Braunfels High School?
I’m starting my 23rd year overall, 13th in NBISD, and 2nd at New Braunfels High School.
Tell us about your school. What makes it stand out?
First, and foremost, the kids. I’ve had the privilege of working in a handful of different districts in Central Texas and South Texas, and without a doubt, we have the best kids. It’s a joy being around them every day. We also have amazing staff members who love kids and love this community. They work so hard every day to make NBHS a great place for students.
What accomplishments are you most proud of during your time at NBHS?
We had an extremely successful run last school year. Academically, our kids shined, and they did so well representing NBHS in our extracurricular programs. Additionally, our district is opening a second high school, Long Creek, and that comes with many challenges. I believe we have been proactive in addressing those challenges while figuring out what’s best for kids and ensuring that we’re taking care of our staff.
How does your school engage the community?
We really try to communicate campus happenings on a regular basis. Additionally, we look for ways to bring local organizations on campus throughout the school year. We also challenge our students to volunteer in the community through our Green Cord program. Students can earn a Green Cord for Graduation by successfully completing 100 hours of community service.
What do you see as the key to your school’s success?
Our committed staff. They put in so much time and effort to make learning meaningful. Additionally, they really try to develop positive relationships with our kiddos. It is so enjoyable seeing the high‑fives, fist bumps, smiles, and hearing all the lighthearted conversations every day.
At the end of your career, what do you think your students and their families would say about you as a leader?
I truly hope people would say that I was a servant leader and committed to making other people’s lives better. Anything else would just be ancillary to me.
Is there anything else you want Veramendi residents to know about your school?
Our new campus is going to be incredible. Our architects and district leadership have spent so much time considering numerous details that will tie in New Braunfels charm. Our community is going to be so proud of a building that will embrace history and incorporate a fresh look.
The last question is a fun one: What three items would you bring with you on a deserted island?
- My wife and kids (they HAVE to count as 1 item)
- AM/FM radio
- A cooler of beer
