NBISD – Meet the Principal of Lamar Elementary
Veramendi is buzzing with excitement over the start of a new school year, and to help our residents get better acquainted with the leadership shaping the educational experience of their children, we sat down with the principal of Lamar Elementary School. With over two decades of dedication to education and a deep commitment to the New Braunfels Independent School District, Chris Russell is entering his sixth year at Lamar Elementary with a vision for fostering community and academic excellence.
How long have you been in education and in your current role as principal of Lamar Elementary?
I am entering my 24th year in education. Of those 24 years, 20 of them have been as a school administrator. This is my 19th year in NBISD and my 6th year serving as the Principal of Lamar Elementary.
Tell us about your school. What makes it stand out?
Lamar Elementary is special because of the history and our community. We pride ourselves on the relationship we have with those we serve; the families, the local businesses and NB as a whole! It builds a truly amazing culture for our campus and it is what makes Lamar Elementary – Lamarvelous!
What accomplishments are you most proud of during your time at Lamar Elementary?
The continued success of our students! We strive to put our passion into our students and it shows by not only their continuous academic success, but also in their pride and sense of belonging.
This past year we were awarded the honor of being on the “Educational Results Partnership’s ‘Honor Roll’ List” of top per performing schools in Texas. This award is based off continuous student achievement over the past 5 years.
How does your school engage the community?
Lamar Elementary has an outstanding parent PTA program that continuously shows support and encouragement to our students and staff. With their supports, we hold regular events open to our community, including Fall Festivals, the Lamarapolloza Music Festival at Krause’s and other engaging events.
Our students and faculty also get into the mix through various philanthropic events each year. We are strong supporters of Non‑Profit organizations like “Lennon‑Aide”, hold several events such as food drives and animal shelter drives and conduct local park clear up events.
What do you see as the key(s) to your school’s success?
Our stakeholders! We have the very best teachers, the very best families and the very best community to support us!
At the end of your career, what do you think your students and their families would say about you as a leader?
That I always put students first! I love the unique opportunity I have to support and grow the lives of not only our students, but our families and teachers. Helping people grow and reach their goals is what is truly fulfilling to me, and knowing I have the ability to play a direct role in making that happening is just amazing!

Last question is a fun one: What three items would you bring with you on a deserted island?
- My family – I am nothing without my family and would be lost without them!
- Tool Chest – Basic tools to help make my space more comfortable/livable
- A Lifetime Supply of Sunscreen – I love the sun, not so much the sunburn!
