Back to School like a Boss

Every parent with students in the New Braunfels ISD wants their child to have both a memorable first day back at school and a good year. Research shows that a parent’s involvement is key to how a child’s school experience will unfold.

That can sound daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. By getting an early start, laying a solid foundation and breaking the preparations into manageable steps, both you and your child can transition into the new school year at Veramendi schools successfully.

Ann Pleshette Murphy, author of “The 7 Stages of Motherhood,”and parenting expert Brenda Nixon, M.A., offer these tips for getting back to school like a boss.

  1. Include Your Child Care Provider.

One of the biggest stressors for preschoolers is whether Mom or Dad will be there to pick them up at the end of the school day. If your child care provider – whether that’s a babysitter, nanny or relative – will be meeting your child after school, make sure your child knows ahead of time.

  1. Establish a New Bed Time.

Avoid bedtime battles by putting your child to bed a little earlier each evening in the weeks prior to school starting. Research shows that children who are well-rested do better in school.

  1. Be Prepared and Organized.

This step goes beyond purchasing the items on the New Braunfels ISD school supply list. If medical forms, permission slips or similar items are required, make sure you have them completed and ready to go before the first day of school. The New Braunfels ISD requires you to produce:

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Your child’s Social Security Card
  • Immunization Record
  • Proof of Residence

If you’re prepared and calm, your child will feel much better about the start of the school year. Get more information on what’s required on the New Braunfels ISD website.

  1. Help Your Child Prepare.

Involve your child in the preparation process, too. Let them accompany you on your school shopping trip, and allow them choose a few special items. Having the “right” lunch box or backpack can help your child feel excited about the start of the school year.

  1. Familiarize your child with the routine.

Make sure your child knows the new routine well before the first day of school. For example, you and your child might walk to school and talk about the routine in the weeks just before school. You could even take some photos of landmarks along the way to school, and create a booklet to help your child remember what the day will be like.

  1. Meet the Teacher.

Building a relationship with your child’s teacher at Veramendi Elementary prior to the first day of school can go a long way toward helping both you and your child feel comfortable. Let the teacher know about any struggles your child may have, and let him or her know you want to be involved. You can also let your child’s teacher know how you prefer to communicate about his or her progress in school.

  1. Share Some of Your Own Memories.

Tell your child about your favorite teachers, friends you made at school, or your favorite subjects. Sharing positive stories with your child can help create an expectation for a good experience.

  1. Take a Deep Breath.

No matter how well prepared you are, back-to-school season can still be stressful. Try to set an example for your child by staying calm and optimistic.  Consider doing your school shopping online to avoid crowds and chaotic situations.

  1. Get Ready the Night Before.

The night before the first day of school will be exciting for you and your child! This is the perfect time to get everything ready for the next morning. Lay out clothes, backpacks, and anything else needed in the morning. This will help reduce morning chaos and make for a calmer start to the day.

  1. Be On Time.

No one likes to be rushed – and no one likes to wait. By preparing as much as possible ahead of time, you can help make sure you and your child get out the door and to the school on time. At the end of the day, allow yourself plenty of time to get to the school if you’re picking up your child. Being the last child waiting in the classroom can feel scary.

  1. Plan Something Fun.

Find out what your children would like to do after their first day of school. It might be as simple as stopping in a park, or just having the chance to tell you about their day. You like to have someone ask how your day went, and your child will, too.
